Kay Brandt

On the web: IAFD, Twitter

Kay Brandt has been around the porn world for some time, directing a number of 'lesbian' films for Girlfriends Films, though most of these were not credited to her by name. She came to more public notice with the release of her film Cherry, for Digital Playground, which was nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Feature Director, and Best Screenplay at the AVN awards. It won for All Girl-Release of the Year at the XBiz Awards, where Brandt was nominated for Director of the Year. The sequel, Cherry 2, won for Best All-Girl Release at the AVN awards. And in 2013, her films Against Her Will and Against Her Will 2, both for New Sensations, were both noimated for All-Girl Release of the Year at the XBiz Awards. Several of the performers in these movies were nominated for individual awards, as well.

In 2015, Brandt directed Safe Landings for Adam and Eve, which was her first movie to focus on heterosexual relationships. It too was nominated for a number of awards, including Best Director, Best Drama, and Best Screenplay at the 2016 AVN Awards, and Feature Movie of the Year, Director of the Year, Screenplay of the Year, and Best Cinemtography at the XBiz Awards. As we say in our review, it deserved all of those accolades. She followed that up with Babysitting the Baumgartners, based upon the best-selling novel by Selena Kitt, and all signs point to Brandt's continuing to be one of porn's most thoughtful and interesting directors.

Two things make Brandt's work special, and both of them have to do with the sex scenes. The first is the photography, which is truly extraordinary. You simply have to see it to appreciate how much of a difference the way she shoots sex makes. The second is the quality of the sex scenes themselves. The performers in her movies do an amazing job of staying in character and having sex the way their characters would. And Brandt gets the camera out of the way and lets them do it, which gives the sex a very natural feel.

To be sure, Brandt does not always get everything right. But when she does, her films are as good as porn gets nowadays. She is one of a handful of directors who are really pushing the boundaries of what porn can be.
