Review

This is a collection of some of Erika Lust's earliest films. It seems almost unfair to review this now. There's a lot more promise here than there is achievement, and of course we know now that this promise would be realized before long. Lust has since, of course, become a feminist porn legend.

The dialog is dubbed in the first, second, and fifth scenes, with all the problems that brings, especially during the sex. And, as the more detailed reviews below will explain, we found the first and second scenes a bit unsatisfying. But the third, "Married with Children", with Julia Taylor and Ramon Nomar, is a wonderful little story of a couple who, once a week, escape from their domestic life together to have wild, kinky sex at a hotel. And the fourth, "To Be Or Not To Be a Good Girl", is even better. This is an extended version of Lust's first sexually explicit film, "The Good Girl", which was released for free on the web (under a Creative Commons licence) in 2004. The story parts are pretty much the same, but there is more sex here, and it's just excellent. The moment where Alex drops her towel, then waits for her soon-to-be lover's reaction, is amazing.

So, well, it's a mixed bag. But if you have never seen "The Good Girl", you really must.

Scene 1: Nadia and the Women (Sandra G, Lady Mai, and Bobbi Eden, ♀♀)

A story of three women, all obsessed with Nadia. They have all met her in different settings—the beach, the sex toy shop where she works, the subway—but all have found her irresistable. And then each of them, after a long seduction, finds themselves invited to Nadia's apartment. We only see the first of these women have sex with Nadia, but the implication is that the others did, too.

The sex itself is fairly inexplicit, as porn goes, much less explicit than in Lust's later movies. We also found the music distracting: It completely obscures any sound the women might make. That, and the dance-like quality of the sex, made it hard to identify, however fleetingly, with the performers and to have any real sense for what they might be feeling. In the end, then, we really didn't find it to be all that hot, though it is visually quite beautiful.

The camera work, as one would expect, is very good. There are all kinds of angles and views, which gives us a very good sense for people, and not just body parts, having sex.

Scene 2: Fuck You, Carlos (Sonia Baby, Eduardo Romo, Rafa Garcia, Nacho Coralini, and Karnya, ♀♂♂)

Carlos is a famous soccer player who has a habit of cheating on his wife, Sonia, who has now caught him in bed with another woman. So, to celebrate the end of their marriage, she arranges a big party where she has sex with two players from his team's arch-rival, and then posts the video on the internet.

We thought maybe a bit too much time was spent on the party itself, which didn't add a lot to the eroticism. But it's a very amusing premise, and a creative way for her to exact her revenge.

The sex is entirely orchestrated by Sonia, and much of it is focused on her pleasure, with the guys going down on her at the same time. But it never feels very passionate, and she never really seems very aroused. We suppose that is not the point, but it made it difficult for us to get into the scene.

The camera work is very good, again as one would expect.

Scene 3: Married With Children (Julia Taylor and Ramon Nomar, ♀♂)

Frank is trying very hard to interest his wife in sex, but it is not going very well, partly due to their young children. One night, though, they get a babysitter, and she goes to a secret hideaway, where she is transformed into a submissive. He arrives, masked, some time later, as her dominant. It is a game they play once a week.

It's a very sexy story, and one that throws an interesting twist on what comes before. We really appreciated how it portrayed BDSM as a loving interaction. Most of that involves spanking, with his hand, a paddle, and a strap, though there is also some light bondage.

The sex itself is very hot, as well. She seems very aroused throughout much of the scene, and there is an obvious connection between them, with the sex flowing very naturally. She has at least a couple orgasms.

The camera work is the best of any of the scenes so far in this movie. It is more varied, and more interesting, while also feeling more intimate. And the music, while a bit typical-pornish, at least isn't so loud that it obscures their sounds.

Scene 4: To Be or Not To Be a Good Girl (Claudia Claire and Lucas Foz, ♀♂)

This is a longer version of Erika Lust's first film, "The Good Girl", which she released for free on the internet in 2004 under a Creative Commons License. As she describes in her TedX talk, the movie was a huge sensation, which launched her career.

There is a somewhat ironic aspect to the story: On the surface, it's a standard "horny girl fucks the pizza delivery guy" porn plot. But, of course, it's not really that.

Alex (Claudia Claire) has a friend Julie (actress not credited) who is extremely sexually adventurous. She is always sharing her stories with Alex, who has been much less adventurous, but who often dreams of doing something a "good girl" would not. So, one night after she has been on the phone with Julie, she orders a pizza and hops into the shower—only to be not quite done when the pizza arrives. She asks him to come into her apartment while she looks for the money, accidentally letting her towel slip, and then shows him out, only then to slink down in disappointment. When he returns, though, to retrieve his forgotten helmet, she gathers the courage to drop her towel and invite him to her bed.

The sex is natural and passionate. They do go through quite a few positions, which can seem quite pornish, but it does not here. It's a treat to see her desire flow so freely and be protrayed so tenderly.

As one would expect, the film is beautifully shot. The subtlety of some of Lust's later work is missing, and, as I have seen others say, it is sometimes edited too jerkily. But it is intimate without being intrusive, and it conveys a real sense for their passion.

As I side note, Lucas Foz performed almost exclusively in gay porn. This is one of only three straight movies he made, and the other two are fetish films.

Scene 5: I Love You, I Hate You (Anthony Martinez and Daniel Royter, ⚣)

Things are apparently not going so well between these two lovers, who are having a big fight, partly because of Miguel's having an affair. It almost gets violent, but then they fall onto the couch and start kissing.

To be honest, we don't really feel competent to rate this scene. Gay male sex isn't our thing, at least not in this form. We do appreciate the way Erika Lust shoots it, though, and also her willingness to include gay male sex at all in this movie.

That said, the over-dubbing is really bad. We obviously can't know, but we expect that the emotion would have come through more clearly had sub-titles been used, and we expect that would have been a better choice for other reasons, too.
