Review

Marisa (Allie Haze) has broken up with her boyfriend Connor (Tommy Gunn), because he cheated on her. She is a wreck. So her friend Karen (AJ Applegate), who has just gotten engaged to her boyfriend Jeff (Daniel Hunter), sets Marisa up with one of his friends, Brian (Michael Vegas). Marisa and Brian meet at a bar, have a fair bit to drink, and end up in bed together, which leaves Marisa wanting to get out of there fast in the morning. But the weather is terrible, and there is no cab service, so Marisa and Brian have to spend the day together. It turns out that they actually like each other and end up in bed again.

Later that day, Connor reappears to apologize. He says that she is like "apple pie", and that he has just been trying other kinds of pie—several kinds, it would seem—so he "needs" her. Apparently, that is enough to get into her pants, even though she just had sex with Brian a few hours ago. But when he says he will pick her up the next day to go to his parents' for Christmas, she suddenly says that she's still hurt and needs some time. So, finally, she realizes that Connor is an asshole and goes to visit Brian.

As our tone may indicate, we found the "twist" at the end to be both predictable and completely implausible. It's true that Marisa has been moping around the whole movie because she's so depressed about the breakup. But why would she hop back into bed with Connor the moment he shows up and then as soon as they're done complain about needing time when he assumes things are back to normal? It just doesn't make a lot of sense, and it makes even less sense than she'd then run off to visit Brian again.

That said, until that point, the story is actually quite interesting, and we found the back and forth, approach and avoidance, between Brian and Marisa to be very cute, and quite convincing. A good bit of time is spent on the story, as well: about 40 minutes, in a movie that's not even an hour and forty minutes.

The story is reminiscent, in many ways, of the non-"Wicked Passions" movies that Stormy Daniels usually makes. Many of those have somewhat silly, almost cartoonish, plots, with sex to match. That's not a criticism. It's just her style—and there's nothing wrong with cartoons! And, like those movies, this one is very funny—laugh out loud funny in places—and the story is enjoyable even if it is not terribly "deep".

The acting here can be really good, too. Haze and Vegas are wondeful, both in the sexual parts and in the non-sexual parts. The way Marisa and Brian end up in bed together again is very sweet, and very funny, and it's great how they both make the most of their "second chance to make a first impression". But there are other times when the acting is not so great, especially toward the beginning. Scarlet Red is probably the worst offender.

As for the sex, it's terrific. The third scene, with Haze and Vegas, is absolutely fantastic, and the first two are nearly as good. All of the scenes are really well paced, too. In particular, they're the right length: long enough to allow the sex to develop, but not so long that you forget what was happening in the story by the time it re-starts. There's plenty of passion, too, and, though there aren't a lot of obvious female orgasms here, the women do seem genuinely to enjoy themselves in all of the scenes.

But maybe the high-point of the movie is the camera work during the sex scenes. It would not be going too far to say it is the best we have ever seen in a mainstream American release. It's much more reminiscent of what you'd find in movies from Lust Cinema or Bright Desire.

Overall, then, this is a really good movie, and we recommend it very highly. In fact, if it weren't for our dissatifaction with certain plot elements, and the last sex scene—both of which feel very anti-climactic—we might have given it five stars.

There are quite a few cute moments, though: He keeps shushing her as she makes too much noise; and when he pulls out a condom, she says, "You were planning this!?" And then she shushes herself later, covering her own mouth with her hand, which is very amusing. The overall feeling, though, is just of fun, and there is a great connection between them. So we enjoyed this scene a lot.

The camera work is fantastic. It's so good, in fact, that we almost forgot to mention it. It's like a referee in sports: They're doing a great job when you forget they're there.

Scene 2: A.J. Applegate and Daniel Hunter (♀♂)

We'll admit that the unfortunate turn in the story may have influenced our judgement here, but she never seems very aroused.
